Bienvenido a De Colores Academy

A Spanish immersion, Reggio Emilia-inspired preschool for children aged 2.9 to 5.

We aim to instill a love of learning through exploration, discovery, and inquiry, promoting Spanish language acquisition and holistic development.

The Immersion Model & Bilingualism

We help children naturally develop their Spanish language skills through engaging and interactive experiences. Our immersive environment, where Spanish is spoken 95% of the day, fosters cognitive, linguistic, and socio-cultural growth. Bilingualism enhances problem-solving skills, memory, attention span, empathy, cross-cultural understanding, and academic performance.

Maestra Yadi

Founder and Lead Teacher

Yadira Velasco, lovingly know as Maestra Yadi, is the heart and founder of De Colores Academy- a Spanish immersion preschool rooted in connection, creativity, and joy.

As a first-generation Mexican-American raised in Los Angeles, Yadira brings a deep sense of culture, language, and identity into everything she creates. With over 20 years of experience in early childhood education, she has dedicated her life to nurturing young children during the most important years of their development.

But what truly sets Maestra Yadi apart is not just her experience-it's her philosophy. She believes children learn best not through pressure or rigid structure, but through play, exploration, music, and meaningful connection.  Inside her classroom, Spanish is not just taught-it's lived. Through songs, hands-on activities, storytelling, and child-led discovery, children naturally absorb the language while building confidence, independence, and a true love of learning.

Her approach is inspired by a blend of play based learning and Reggio Emilia principles, where each child is seen as capable, curious, and full of potential. The environment she creates is calm, nurturing, and intentionally designed to make every child feel safe, seen, and celebrated.

She holds a B.A. in Psychology, a minor in Child Development, and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. Yet, her greatest strength lies in her ability to connect deeply with children and families, creating a true sense of community.

A Pivotal Foundation

De Colores was a truly wonderful experience for our son Clay. Not only did he get the education in Spanish, but he also received the most loving and compassionate care possible from the teachers in his 2.5 years at the school. Clay started school with some social anxiety, and it improved so much through his schooling. He felt comfortable with his teachers and peers, and he would come home excited to recount his day and show us his art. The graduation ceremony put on at De Colores was also the most personal and beautiful tribute to his growth. Clay looked forward to attending school every day, and we are so thankful for this pivotal foundation. I don’t know how anything could compare to his time at De Colores!
